I'm not a big Obama fan, but the handling of this incident impressed me and gave me some new pespect for the President.

Obviously, the "stupid" comment was wrong and I believe that he did apologize for this publicly. More impressive was how he got the two parties together over a beer and resolved the issue. Otherwise, we would still be hearing about it.

The most important reason for an apology is to respect the other party and resolve the issue. Why the Washington and Hollywood types are too cowardly to do this is beyond me.
